Description
5 Wood Projects Everyone Builds Wrong (And Why They Fail)
Go look at something you built two or three years ago. The one you were proud of. Clean edges, tight joints, solid as a rock the day you finished it. Now there's a crack down the tabletop wide enough to fit a pencil in, the gate drags on the concrete, and the planter's bottom rail goes soft when you press your thumb into it.
It wasn't bad wood. It wasn't lack of skill. Almost every failed wood project comes down to just two mistakes, over and over: water trapped somewhere it can't escape, or wood fastened down so tight it couldn't move with the seasons — so it tore itself apart finding the room you didn't give it.
In this video, I break down 5 common builds everyone gets wrong the same way, and the small fix for each:
🪵 The outdoor tabletop — why a "clean" tight seam is actually where rot starts, and the buckling that follows
🪵 The planter box — three directions water attacks it at once, and the 3-part fix
🪵 The workbench top — why screwing a wide top down solid is exactly what cracks heirloom-quality lumber
🪵 The outdoor bench — the hidden leg-bottom mistake that rots a piece from the feet up while everything above still looks perfect
🪵 The gate — the simple geometry (not the hardware) that makes every gate eventually sag, and the one diagonal brace that stops it, if run the right direction
Every single one of these is a 5-minute fix at the planning stage, and a brutal, expensive one once the damage is already done.
