Description

You've been to airshows before. But nothing about flying into one Wisconsin town with thousands of other airplanes is going to make sense to you. Miles from Oshkosh, the radio is already full. Controllers do not call every airplane by its registration number because there is no time. They identify you by color, tell you to rock your wings, and send you toward a runway where colored dots become your landing targets. Then you touch down, clear the runway, taxi onto the grass, and finally understand what you have flown into. More than ten thousand airplanes arrive around EAA AirVenture, filling Wisconsin fields with wings, tents, families, homebuilt aircraft, warbirds, and pilots who crossed states — and sometimes oceans — just to be there. This is the story of how a fly-in that began in 1953 with just twenty-one airplanes became one of the largest aviation gatherings on Earth — and of the ordinary people who made it possible. Seventeen-year-old Dash Speidel had earned his private pilot certificate only six weeks earlier when he flew from California to Oshkosh with his family. Around him are builders who spent years making airplanes in their garages, volunteers who return decade after decade, and families passing aviation from one generation to the next.
