Description
Living in Guyana: a travel documentary about one year inside a Guyanese house on stilts. Here the land sits below the sea, so homes stand on stilts — and every holiday climbs the front steps.
Follow a year of real Guyanese life, month by month. In March, neighbors turn your front steps purple during Phagwah. On Easter Monday, a whole coastline flies kites from the sea wall. Muslim families share Eid meat across the fence. On Emancipation Day, Guyanese remember the village that freed people bought in 1839 with coins rolled in wheelbarrows. Diwali lamps line every step, and before Christmas families "break up the house", hanging new curtains at midnight while masquerade bands dance in the street.
You'll meet kite makers, koker keepers, cultural scholars and families who keep these traditions alive. You'll also find out why the English word "hammock" traces back to a language family whose speakers still live in Guyana.
💬 Which Guyanese tradition would you join first: Phagwah, Easter kites, Diwali or a Guyanese Christmas? Tell us in the comments. If you've been to Guyana, just say "Inside!"
