Description
A working pocket knife goes dull by noon even after a morning sharpening session. The edge folds on rope, skids on leather, and quits halfway through the day. Most men blame the steel or their sharpening angle, but the real problem happens in the 10 seconds after they put the stone away.
An old saddlemaker outside Brewster County showed the method ranch hands used for decades: an Arkansas stone kept cool with oil, a 20 to 25 degree angle held steady by feel, and a strop to align the microscopic teeth before the first cut. The difference between a sharp edge and a working edge comes down to geometry, heat control, and one step that most men skip. Without the strop, the burr left by the stone breaks off on the first cut and the blade is dull before it touches rope.
Pull-through sharpeners and bench grinders rip the steel or cook the temper out of the blade. A strop every 3 or 4 days keeps the edge biting clean. The stone comes out once a month. One man in Elko sharpened twice a year and stropped every night after supper — his knife stayed sharper than most fresh off the stone.
