The Banned 1975: Film That Shocked France: Le Sexe Qui Parle

Le Sexe qui parle (1975) is remembered as the banned French film that shocked a nation, but was it ever truly banned? This investigative film history documentary explores the controversial 1975 production by director Claude Mulot, credited as Frédéric Lansac, and the legal shift in France that followed its release. Starring Pénélope Lamour and Jean-Loup Philippe, Le Sexe qui parle opened in Paris in November 1975 during a brief and unusual moment in French cultural history. This documentary examines the film's origins, its literary inspiration in Diderot's Les bijoux indiscrets, its cast and production, its reported budget and commercial reach, its festival recognition, its international release, and the censorship questions that followed. At the center is an unresolved mystery: how a film so widely remembered as banned was shaped by something quieter than a single decree. This is a story of banned film history, controversial movie history, and the wider history of French cinema in the 1970s. It sits within cult cinema history, film censorship history, and adult cinema history, and it asks how cinema is classified, taxed, restricted, and ultimately remembered.
