Description
Why do animals keep evolving into crabs? This science documentary digs into evolution, biology, and weird animal facts to show how natural selection built the crab body at least five times, and why it keeps coming undone.
A coconut crab climbs a tree at night and breaks a sleeping bird's wings. The king crab on your plate is, genetically, a hermit crab. A 95-million-year-old crab may have kept its baby body for life. And a five-second experiment hints your brain stores crabs the way it stores faces.
This evolution documentary traces carcinization from 1916, when Lancelot Borradaile named it in a report from Scott's Terra Nova expedition, to a 2026 study showing crabs' sideways walk evolved only once. The verdict is stranger than the meme: evolution isn't aiming for the crab. It just keeps landing there.
We cover the leg-count test that exposes fake crabs, a claw that pinches almost as hard as a lion bites, a crab sealed in amber, frog crabs that gave the crab body up, king crabs creeping toward Antarctica, and the Soviet plan that let red king crabs loose in the Barents Sea.
Can evolution run in reverse? Why only ten-legged crustaceans? And if we rewound the tape of life, would the crab return, and would we?
Drop a comment: Did you know king crabs are really hermit crabs?
