Description

How One Rejected Invention Became the Windshield Wiper #shorts #documentary How did one rejected invention become a feature used on cars around the world? In the winter of 1902–1903, Mary Anderson was riding through New York City in a streetcar when she noticed a dangerous problem. Snow and sleet kept covering the windshield. The driver had to open the window and clear the glass by hand, again and again. Mary Anderson asked a simple question: What if the driver could clean the windshield without leaving the seat? Back in Birmingham, Alabama, she developed a mechanical window-cleaning device with a rubber blade, a movable arm, and a handle operated from inside the vehicle. On November 10, 1903, Anderson received U.S. Patent 743,801 for her window cleaning device. But her invention faced a surprising problem: rejection. In 1905, a Canadian company declined to commercialize the device, questioning its commercial value. Cars were still relatively uncommon, and some people believed moving windshield wipers could distract drivers. Her patent expired in 1920. As automobiles became more popular, windshield wipers became increasingly important, and Cadillac began fitting them as standard equipment in 1922. Mary Anderson did not become wealthy from her invention. But her idea helped shape an essential vehicle safety feature used around the world today. In this documentary, discover: • Who Mary Anderson was • How the windshield wiper was invented • The snowy streetcar journey that inspired her • How the first manually operated windshield wiper worked • Mary Anderson's 1903 patent • Why her invention was rejected • How windshield wipers became standard equipment • The forgotten history behind an everyday invention One simple observation. One rejected invention. A lasting change in driving history. #WindshieldWiper #MaryAnderson #InventionHistory #AutomotiveHistory #WomenInventors #HistoryOfTechnology #ForgottenInventions #Engineering #HistoryDocumentary
