The Mammal That Lives Like a Plant: The Naked Mole-Rat's Secret to Surviving a Cave-In

Two meters beneath the scorching East African savanna lives a creature that defies the fundamental laws of zoology. The naked mole-rat (*Heterocephalus glaber*) has built an extraordinary underground society: the colony inhabits a giant living tuber, feeding on its flesh while diligently sealing wounds with mud so the plant—and the underground city within it—can continue to grow for years. But the ultimate test arrives when the claws of a honey badger breach their tunnels and an African beaked snake slithers inside. Following a sudden collapse, the colony finds itself trapped in an airtight space where oxygen levels plummet to near zero. While the snake suffocates, the mole-rat activates a unique biological superpower: its cells switch to burning fructose—much like plants do—allowing its brain to function for up to 18 minutes without a single breath of air! With teeth that protrude beyond the lips and move like tweezers, a total insensitivity to pain, and a Queen with an elongated spine—witness how this remarkable underground mammal triumphs in total darkness and stifling air. #wildlife #animals #documentary #nature #survival #dungbeetle #honeybadger #africawildlife #heterocephalusglaber
