Real facts in this video: • 1642: Phuntsog Namgyal was crowned the first Chogyal ("dharma king") at Yuksom by three lamas. The Namgyal dynasty ruled until 1975: 333 years. • The Lepcha are Sikkim's oldest people (they call themselves Róng); the Bhutia came from Tibet. • Bhutan and Nepal (the Gorkhas) invaded Sikkim in the 18th century. In 1835 the Chogyal granted Darjeeling to the British East India Company; an allowance of Rs 3,000 a year came later. By 1890 Sikkim was a British protectorate. • 5 December 1950: the Indo-Sikkim Treaty made Sikkim an Indian protectorate - India handled its defence, foreign affairs and communications, and kept a Political Officer in Gangtok. • About three-quarters of the people were of Nepali origin, while the ruling elite was Bhutia-Lepcha; the State Council gave both groups equal seats. • Palden Thondup Namgyal, the 12th and last Chogyal, married Hope Cooke of New York in 1963 (she was 22); his coronation was in 1965. In 1966 she wrote an article arguing that the Darjeeling grant was not a gift. • Bhutan joined the UN in 1971; the Chogyal wanted a similar status for Sikkim. • 1967: Indian and Chinese troops clashed at Nathu La, on Sikkim's border. • 1973: protests over alleged election rigging; the Chogyal asked India for help; the 8 May 1973 agreement brought an elected assembly and an India-appointed Chief Executive. Hope Cooke left for the US the same year. • 1974: the Sikkim Congress of Kazi Lhendup Dorjee won 31 of 32 seats; the Government of Sikkim Act 1974 cut the Chogyal's powers. The 35th Amendment (September 1974) made Sikkim an "associate state" with seats in India's Parliament. • February 1975: the Chogyal attended King Birendra's coronation in Kathmandu and spoke to the press about Sikkim's status. • 9 April 1975: the Indian Army disarmed the palace guard in Gangtok (one guard was killed) and the Chogyal was confined to his palace. 10 April: the assembly abolished the Chogyal's office. • 14 April 1975 referendum: 59,637 for, 1,496 against (about 97.5%). • 16 May 1975: Sikkim became India's 22nd state (36th Amendment); Kazi Lhendup Dorjee became its first Chief Minister. 16 May is Sikkim Day. • Two sides: the Chogyal called it an annexation and some critics called the vote rushed and held with troops present; India's position is that the people chose in an open vote. Historians still debate it. • Today Sikkim is India's second-smallest state and its least populous; in 2016 it became India's first fully organic state. • Palden Thondup Namgyal died of cancer in New York on 29 January 1982.
