Description
Walk the Beatles' Merseyside beyond Liverpool city center. From Southport's Floral Hall to a no audience BBC shoot, we retrace the gigs and stories that forged Beatlemania.
Join host Spencer on a location-by-location journey through Southport and beyond, where the Beatles gigged before stadiums and spotlights. Inside the Art Deco Floral Hall, hear how they played four times across 1962 and 1963, including nights just after Love Me Do and their London Palladium breakthrough. Writer Ron Ellis recalls trying to host the band at his mum’s after the October 1963 show, only for the Royal Variety announcement to trigger a media scrum and whisk them to London.
We step into Club Django at the Queen’s Hotel and the Kingsway Casino’s Marine Rooms, where the Beatles played eight times in 1962, sparked chants for Pete Best, and saw fees climb as demand exploded. On Lord Street’s hidden Glen Park Club, the band slipped down alleyway steps for a November 1961 date likely arranged by Pete Best’s mother, Mo. At the Southport Arts Centre, once Cambridge Hall, they shared a Joe Brown bill on 26 July 1962; the next day was the vast New Brighton Tower Ballroom.
At the Southport Odeon, Spencer reads his saved setlist from 26 August 1963: Roll Over Beethoven, Thank You Girl, Chains, A Taste of Honey, She Loves You, I Saw Her Standing There, From Me to You, Baby It’s You, Boys, and Twist and Shout. The following morning, 27 August 1963, the Beatles filmed The Mersey Sound at the Little Theatre without an audience so the BBC could capture clean audio.
Beyond Southport, we visit early 1961 dates at Birkdale’s Air Training Corps hall and High Park Labour Club. In Seaforth and Litherland, veterans recall the 27 December 1960 Litherland Town Hall show announced straight from Hamburg, leather-clad and electrifying. Later, June Furlong shares vivid memories of John Lennon and Stuart Sutcliffe at the Liverpool College of Art. We also climb to Lewis’s 5 to 7 Club, where the band played on 28 November 1962, and open Liverpool’s Records Office files on the 10 July 1964 civic reception, school registers, and more.
