How THIS Scene Proved Barristan Served the Realm, Not the King

Barristan Selmy’s dismissal from the Kingsguard is remembered as one of his most humiliating moments in Game of Thrones — but the scene may actually prove something much deeper about his loyalty. In this video, we break down how Joffrey stripping Barristan of his white cloak forced the legendary knight to choose between serving the king and serving what the crown was supposed to represent. After decades under Aerys Targaryen, Robert Baratheon, and finally Joffrey, Barristan reaches a moment where obedience itself would mean betraying his oath. We examine the hidden meaning behind Barristan refusing Joffrey’s lands, removing his own cloak, throwing down his sword, and delivering one of the most memorable Kingsguard moments in the series. We also compare his decision with Jaime Lannister killing the Mad King and ask whether the two knights ultimately made the same choice: the realm over the king. Was Barristan Selmy truly breaking his Kingsguard oath — or was this the first time he finally understood what that oath was supposed to mean?
