Description
A revolving door resists wind—but a panicked crowd can jam it. After the 1942 Cocoanut Grove fire, designs that fold flat under pressure became a safety requirement. The inventor had patented the idea decades earlier.
The fire killed 492 people. The revolving door was one of several exit failures; locked, hidden, and inward-opening exits also contributed.
