Description

Germany has dramatically escalated its response to Russia as tensions between Berlin and Moscow enter a dangerous new phase. Germany has shut down the Russian Consulate General in Bonn as relations with Moscow deteriorate amid accusations of Russian-linked hybrid operations and growing security concerns across Europe. At the same time, Germany is strengthening NATO’s eastern flank, expanding military support for Ukraine, and building up its permanent Lithuania Brigade, which is expected to include around 4,800 German soldiers once fully operational. But Germany is not acting alone. France is reinforcing protection against hybrid threats. Poland has warned about possible Russian provocations against countries supporting Ukraine. Denmark has also confronted Moscow over military activity as European governments increasingly focus on drones, sabotage, critical infrastructure and the security of NATO’s eastern frontier. In this video, we examine the rapidly escalating Germany–Russia confrontation, the closure of Russian diplomatic facilities, Germany’s military buildup in Lithuania, NATO’s eastern flank, increasing support for Ukraine, and what all of this could mean for the future of the Russia–Ukraine war and European security. Europe’s relationship with Moscow is changing fast. Germany, once one of Russia’s most important economic partners in Europe, is now preparing for a very different security environment. Could Europe be entering a new era of confrontation with Moscow? And how far is Germany prepared to go? Watch until the end for the full geopolitical breakdown, and subscribe to Power Faultlines for more analysis on Russia, Ukraine, NATO, European security and the global power struggles reshaping our world.
