Methodology: This ranking uses a Historical Popularity Index (HPI) designed to compare anime-character popularity across different eras. The dataset is reconstructed quarterly from 1970 to 2026, combining period-specific polls and rankings with international reach, franchise visibility, internet interest, major releases and character events, long-term cultural impact, and era-adjusted media exposure. Scores are calibrated within each quarter. The HPI is a comparative index rather than an official audience count: 10,000,000 represents the highest single-quarter popularity peak in the entire dataset. Because no comprehensive worldwide character-popularity database exists for the pre-internet era, earlier periods are reconstructed from the best available historical evidence, with greater emphasis placed on broad trends and ranking order than on small differences between adjacent scores.
