Underwater Drone Explored the SS Edmund Fitzgerald — What It Captured No One WAS READY Deep beneath the cold waters of Lake Superior, the wreck of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald remains one of the most haunting mysteries in Great Lakes maritime history. When the enormous cargo ship disappeared during a violent November storm in 1975, all 29 crew members lost their lives. Nearly five decades later, underwater footage and detailed surveys continue to reveal the condition of the wreck and raise questions about its final voyage. In May 1976, a U.S. Navy underwater recovery vehicle called CURV III descended to the wreck, approximately 535 feet below the lake's surface. Its cameras recorded thousands of feet of video and hundreds of photographs, documenting the ship's remains and helping investigators examine the evidence left behind.
