Description

How does an oyster actually make a pearl? A pearl isn't created by magic. It begins with a biological response when an irritant becomes trapped inside the oyster's soft tissues. The oyster protects the affected area by producing nacre, also known as mother-of-pearl. Layer by layer, this material builds around the irritant, eventually forming the structure we recognize as a pearl. In this short documentary, we visualize the hidden process — from the trapped irritant to nacre deposition, microscopic layers, and the final pearl. Nature doesn't waste a problem. Sometimes, it builds something beautiful from one. 🦪 Subscribe to BELOW 71 for more science, wildlife and hidden stories from nature.
