The Entire History of the Persian Empire Explained

Before Rome became powerful, a Persian king named Cyrus built an empire that would become one of the largest the ancient world had ever seen. But the Persian Empire was never just one empire. From Cyrus the Great and the rise of the Achaemenids, to Darius, Xerxes and the wars with Greece, the Persian Empire dominated enormous territories across the ancient world. Then Alexander the Great destroyed the Achaemenid Empire. But Persia did not disappear. The Parthians rebuilt Persian power and became one of Rome's greatest eastern rivals. Centuries later, the Sasanians created another powerful Persian empire and fought Rome and Byzantium for control of the Near East. Eventually, the Sasanian Empire fell in the seventh century CE. But Persian civilization survived. Its language, culture, administration, scholarship, art and traditions continued to influence the Middle East and Central Asia for centuries. In this video, we travel through more than a thousand years of Persian imperial history — from Cyrus the Great to the fall of the Sasanians, and explore how Persia repeatedly lost its empires but preserved its civilization.
