Description
On December 5, 1957, Orson Welles answered Universal's recut of Touch of Evil with a 58-page memo explaining, scene by scene, what the film needed. The memo didn't change the release, and the studio's 94-minute version went out as half of a double feature. It took until 1998 for an editor to rebuild the film from those pages. Payback, released in 1999, went through something similar, with roughly 30 percent of it rewritten and reshot without its director.
