Sherman McCoy is a wealthy Wall Street bond trader living a privileged life in New York City. He has money, status, and everything that appears to define success, but one reckless decision is about to turn his comfortable world upside down. After Sherman and his mistress Maria become involved in a late-night accident in the Bronx, they panic and leave the scene. When the victim falls into a coma, the incident quickly becomes a major public controversy, attracting the attention of police, prosecutors, journalists, politicians, and ambitious lawyers. Peter Fallow, a struggling journalist desperate for a career-making story, sees an opportunity. As rumors spread, he begins building a sensational narrative around the accident, while Reverend Bacon uses the case to advance his own political and social agenda. Sherman's carefully protected world begins to collapse as the media turns him into a public villain. His marriage, career, reputation, and financial security are all placed under enormous pressure. What began as one terrible mistake becomes a battle involving class, race, money, ambition, and the hunger for power.
