Description

Thirty-seven thousand strangers at Fenway Park sing the same three horn notes, right on the beat, and nobody leads them. A German choir director from the city of Bach couldn't work out how. Jonas Albrecht has led choirs in Leipzig most of his life, and his choir is down to nineteen voices. On a summer trip to Boston he brings his brother-in-law Dieter, a retired tram mechanic and football season-ticket holder from Dortmund. Dieter still hasn't forgiven Neil Diamond's song for being played at Wembley after England beat Germany in 2021, and he's sure nobody sings an old pop song unless someone tells them to. Then comes the eighth inning. The whole ballpark sings "Sweet Caroline" and adds the "Bah! Bah! Bah!" and "So good! So good! So good!" that were never on the 1969 record. Who started it? Why is a New Yorker's love song the nightly hymn of a city it never mentions? And why does an old man in a faded blue windbreaker keep his hand on a laminated ticket stub while everyone else raises theirs? Along the way: the Green Monster, the scoreboard still changed by hand, the batter's eye seats, how Amy Tobey first played the song in 1997, how Charles Steinberg made it part of every game in 2002, and the week in April 2013 that made it much more than a ballgame song.
