The Oath Don Bosco Made Street Boys Take

In 1847, Saint John Bosco started a brotherhood for Turin's poorest boys, and made it harder to join, not easier. This is the exact vow the Company of St. Aloysius Gonzaga made before the altar. THE PROMISE (Memorie Biografiche, Vol. III): "I, N.N., promise to do what I can to imitate St. Louis Gonzaga; therefore, to flee bad companions, to avoid obscene talk, to encourage others to virtue by word and good example, both in church and outside of church; I also promise to observe all the rules of the Company. This I hope to carry out with the help of the Lord and the protection of the Saint. Every day I will say: Glorious St. Louis Gonzaga, I humbly beg you to receive me under your protection and to obtain for me from the Lord the help to practice your virtues in life, so as to make a holy death and one day share in your glory in Paradise. Amen." — Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be, Jesus, mercy. Archbishop Fransoni insisted on one safeguard: neglecting a rule of the Company was never a sin, only the loss of a spiritual good. Don Bosco built this in from the start — real freedom, not scrupulosity. Episode 555 _____________________________ Don't Miss Our NEW Monthly Promoter Program!
