Everyone who watched Hardcastle and McCormick remembers the sound of the Coyote X tearing through a chase scene. Almost nobody agrees on what was actually making it.
This video traces every version of that car — because there wasn't just one. There was a Season 1 hero car built on a Volkswagen Beetle pan with a Porsche 914-spec flat-four engine (Confirmed), a thinly-documented second Season 1 driving unit (Reported), at least one stunt car built on a completely unrelated dune buggy chassis (Reported, single-source), and a Season 2 replacement built on a DeLorean DMC-12 platform after actor Brian Keith couldn't comfortably fit in the original car's cockpit (Confirmed across five independent sources).
We go back to where the shape actually came from — Bruce McLaren's M6GT, a road-going supercar planned for 250 units that stopped at just three chassis after McLaren was killed testing an unrelated Can-Am car in 1970. We cover the Manta Cars kit-car industry that copied that shape onto Volkswagen bones for a fraction of the cost. We cover the borrowed Ferrari interior, the dubbed engine sound nobody has ever definitively identified (Contested — competing accounts point to a Countach V12 and a Ferrari 308, neither confirmed), and the unreconciled ownership trails that leave two of these cars' current whereabouts genuinely open questions.
Every claim in this video is labeled by how well it's sourced. That's the whole premise of this channel: most car-history content flattens a messy, contested record into a clean story because a clean story performs better. We'd rather show you where the record is actually solid — and where it genuinely isn't — than pretend a coin-flip account is settled fact.
CONFIDENCE TIER KEY: Confirmed
— Independently verified across multiple primary or reliable sources Corroborated
— Multiple independent sources agree, not fully primary-documented Reported
— Single-source or secondhand account, not independently verified Stated-unknown
— Openly acknowledged as unresolved by all available sources Contested
— Multiple credible accounts conflict with no resolution
