Description

What happens when a population has unlimited food, water, shelter, and freedom from predators? In this video, we explore Universe 25, the famous mouse population experiment conducted by American ethologist John B. Calhoun. We look at how the colony developed, what happened as the population increased, and how unusual social and behavioral patterns emerged. We’ll also explain the Calhoun Effect, including concepts such as population density, social stress, disrupted social behavior, withdrawal, aggression, and the phenomenon Calhoun described as the “behavioral sink.” Most importantly, we’ll separate what the experiment actually demonstrated from the broader interpretations that have been made about human society. In this video: • What was the Universe 25 experiment? • Who was John B. Calhoun? • How did the mouse colony develop? • What happened as population density increased? • What is the Calhoun Effect? • What did Calhoun mean by “behavioral sink”? • What can—and cannot—be concluded from the experiment? • Why is Universe 25 still discussed today? Disclaimer: Universe 25 was an experiment involving mice. Its findings should not be treated as direct proof of what will happen to human societies. Human societies are considerably more complex, and applying animal experiments directly to humans requires caution. #Universe25 #CalhounEffect #Psychology
