Description
How did humans get blonde hair? Surprisingly, blonde hair evolved at least twice, once in Europe and once in the Solomon Islands of the Pacific, from completely different genes.
In the Solomon Islands, up to 1 in 10 people are born with naturally blonde hair, and it has nothing to do with European ancestry. Scientists traced it to a single-letter change in the TYRP1 gene, a variant found only in Oceania. European blonde hair comes from a completely different genetic switch, linked to the KITLG gene. Same hair color, two separate origins, opposite ends of the planet.
In this video, we explore the origin of blonde hair, the genetics behind hair color, what ancient DNA reveals about the first blonde humans, and why evolution sometimes reaches the same result twice.
