Description
Toilet ring back a week after you scrubbed it? The fix for the ring is a wet pumice stone, and the reason it keeps coming back is hiding under the rim, in the little holes your brush never touches.
In this video: how to remove a toilet bowl ring with a pumice stone without scratching the porcelain, how to check under the toilet rim with your phone's selfie camera, why hard water clogs the rim holes and weakens every flush, what brown, orange or black stains in a toilet mean, why bleach can make iron stains worse, how to clean clogged toilet rim jets with hot vinegar and a paper clip, and the weekly habit that keeps the ring from coming back.
If you have hard water, a weak flush, or a ring the blue gel never touched, start here.
A pumice stick is about $2 at Walmart, or about $9 on a handle. American Standard's help pages give the selfie-camera check, hot (never boiling) vinegar down the overflow tube, and a cup of white vinegar in the tank every week or two (a gallon lasts about four months). Kohler's version plugs the rim holes with wet paper towels so the cleaner sits inside the rim for up to a full day. Older toilets could use as much as 6 gallons a flush; today's federal limit is 1.6. University of Georgia Extension: iron and manganese stains are hard to remove with common household cleaners. Blue tablet in your tank? Take it out and flush a few times before any vinegar, because bleach plus an acid gives off chlorine gas.
