Description
How much do you really need to retire in South America? We ranked 10 countries by the exact amount you need invested to live well indefinitely, without ever touching your principal.

Rent is not what breaks a retirement budget here. Currencies, taxes, and politics are. Local prices in Paraguay rose just 1.5% in a year, yet anyone retiring in Paraguay with dollars saw costs jump almost 33%. In Argentina, a weaker peso absorbed more than half of a 43% rise in local prices.
Our model uses a 3% safe withdrawal rate, October 2026 prices and a realistic expat retirement budget for a single person: a furnished one-bedroom apartment, private health insurance, groceries, transportation, and a social life. Then we add expat taxes in South America, because some countries tax your foreign investment income heavily and others don't tax it at all.
You'll get a full retire abroad cost breakdown for Maldonado, Florianópolis, Valencia, La Serena, Mendoza, Santa Cruz, Asunción, Bucaramanga, Arequipa, and Cuenca, plus safety, politics, and flights to the U.S. If you plan to retire in Colombia, Peru, or Ecuador, or just want the cheapest countries to retire on a dollar income, this video gives you your number.

🔎 EXCERPT 🔎
If you're choosing where to retire in South America by asking "where is rent cheapest?",
you're asking the wrong question.
Rent is not what sinks a retirement here.
Currencies do.
Taxes do.
Politics does.
In one country, local prices rose just 1.5% in a year – they have less inflation than the US!
Yet for you, arriving with dollars, life there got almost 33% more expensive.
In another, local inflation was 40%, but for you, it got cheaper, and you will discover about it in a few minutes.
In my 26 years living in South America, I've seen economic and tax changes do more damage to a retiree's budget than any landlord ever could.
I've watched retirees who did everything right have to move back home for this.
So I built a model to answer one question:
How much do you need invested to live a good life in each country in South America indefinitely, without ever touching the principal?
Ten countries. October 2026 prices. Taxes included.
By the end of this video, you'll know your number, and which country gives you the most life for the least money.
