Description

Beneath the streets of London lies a massive 25-kilometer tunnel built to protect the River Thames from sewage pollution. London's Thames Tideway Tunnel, known as the Super Sewer, captures storm sewage from the city's aging Victorian sewer network and carries it toward treatment instead of allowing it to overflow into the river. Built up to around 67 meters underground, the tunnel is about 7.2 meters wide and uses massive tunnel boring machines, deep shafts, gravity, and existing sewer infrastructure to move millions of cubic meters of wastewater. But this isn't just a tunnel. It's a hidden piece of infrastructure designed to help protect the Thames for at least 120 years.
