The internet keeps telling 45-to-64-year-olds what they can no longer do. The rulebook says the opposite: past 45 it opens seven age gates in your favor. We walk every gate with the public document that creates it, priced through one invented couple — Renee and Carl, both 52 — so you can run the same arithmetic on your numbers.
THE SEVEN GATES
• GATE 50 — the catch-up: +$8,000 in a 401(k), +$1,100 in an IRA, every year (2026).
• GATE 55 — two keys: the HSA adds $1,000/yr per spouse, and the rule of 55 opens that employer's 401(k) penalty-free.
• GATE 59½ — the early-withdrawal wall comes down everywhere.
• GATES 60–63 — the super window: the catch-up becomes $11,250 — $35,750 per worker, $71,500 per couple, per year — and it snaps back at 64.
• GATES 62–70 — the claiming dial: $1,000 becomes $700 at 62; delayed credits add 8% a year to 70.
• GATE 65 — Medicare: Part B is $202.90/mo, and the month enrollment begins, HSA contributions end.
• GATE 73 — the bill: required minimum distributions begin — Roth money sits outside it.
Plus the 2026 twist: catch-ups go in as Roth once prior-year wages top $150,000.
