Description
Why Submarines Can’t Dive Deeper (And the Soviet Sub That Did)
The ocean is about 3,700 metres deep on average, yet most submarines are built to work in the top few hundred metres. So what actually stops a submarine from diving deeper? The answer involves buckling, weight budgets, and one Soviet submarine made of titanium that dived to roughly 1,000 metres.
In this video we look at how water pressure really destroys a hull, why steel isn’t “squashed” but folds, what happened to USS Thresher in 1963, and why the strongest shape for deep diving (a sphere) is useless for a warship.
