Description

Burgess Meredith guides American GIs through wartime Britain: pub etiquette, rationing, money, tea culture, and respect across color lines, with a surprise Bob Hope cameo. Step inside a real English pub and learn how to fit in. It is more like a community club than a saloon, open a few hours midday and again in the evening. Beer is served warm, and you will hear about bitter and mild. Regulars play quiet games like darts and shove halfpenny, read the House of Commons debates, and prefer to be left to finish what they are doing. If you buy a round, expect them to return the favor, so avoid ordering pricey drinks they cannot easily buy back. Invited to supper? Rationing shapes every meal. This film shows how a single guest can wipe out a week’s supplies: meat portions are tiny, butter is about two ounces a week with eight ounces of margarine, sugar is eight ounces, jam four, tomatoes are rare, crockery is scarce, and candy is rationed. Families keep bomb fragments as grim mementos, children are often away, and a son might be flying as a Lancaster rear gunner after 21 raids. Be considerate and do not take more than your share. At school, an older teacher the kids call Mr. Chips returns so younger men can serve. He drills basics: London on the Thames, Edinburgh and Belfast as capitals, and the scale of the United Kingdom at roughly 600 miles north to south and about 300 miles at its widest. Day to day: expect frequent tea, mind the left-hand driving, wear your dog tags at all times, and let Special Services and the Red Cross help plan passes, places to visit, and lodging. Mail from home can take six to eight weeks to catch up, and you must keep locations and assignments to yourself for security. Remember pay differences with local Tommies and do not rub it in. A frank segment on race shows a British woman inviting a Black GI to tea and a talk with General Lee, head of Services of Supply, who urges Americans to live up to our promise of mutual respect and to act together as soldiers first. For comic relief, Bob Hope pops in to decode three and ninepence, shillings, half crowns, ten shilling notes, and pounds for confused Yanks. #WWIIBritain #BurgessMeredith #BobHope #BritishPubs #Rationing #GIEtiquette #BritishMoney
