Description

👉 How to find out what your things are really worth → https://mrwalterashford.com The painting has been on that wall since before the couch, and the couch is thirty years old. Then somebody downsizes, it comes down for the first time in decades, and everybody in the room says the same sentence: it's only a print. 🖼️ In forty years I could count on my hands the times I have carried a picture out of a donation pile. But every single time it went the same way — nobody in the house had turned it round. ⚠️ HONEST FIRST, SO THE VIDEO IS WORTH YOUR TIME: original does NOT mean valuable. A genuine oil by nobody in particular sells for less than a good print of somebody famous, and most old paintings in American houses are decorative and bring $50–$300, a lot of which is the frame. Tonight is not a lottery ticket. It is how to stop giving away the one in fifty without looking — and how to stop damaging the one in five that is worth something modest. 💡 CLUE 5 — kill the overhead light and rake a lamp across the surface. Paint has landscape, and the texture AGREES with the picture. Then zoom your phone camera right into a cheek or a cloud: if you see ORDER — dots, a rosette, a grid — it was printed. Plus the textured-print trap, and the whitest point test (in a painting the white is the thickest paint; in a print it is the flattest). 📐 CLUE 4 — the edges nobody frames: paint carrying round the side, TACKS vs STAPLES, the little wooden stretcher keys rattling in the frame, and the empty old tack holes that tell you the canvas was restretched. 🏷️ CLUE 3 — the back is the document. The framer's oval label with a street and a town is worth more than anything on the front, because a town is searchable and a landscape is not. Search the FRAMER and the TOWN, not the artist. And never peel a label — photograph it. ✍️ CLUE 2 — the signature is the LAST thing to check, not the first. Read it as LETTERS, not as a name. A crisp clean signature on an aged crazed surface is a reason to be suspicious, not delighted. Unsigned is not a problem. 🔬 CLUE 1 — what it is painted ON, and real age-cracking versus printed crackle. Plus the best ten dollars in this video: a cheap UV flashlight in a dark room shows you every repair somebody once thought this picture was worth paying for. 🚫 AND THE ONE INSTRUCTION THAT BEATS ALL FIVE CLUES: do not clean it. Not water, not bread, not a cloth, not the thing your neighbor swears by. A wiped painting is a damaged painting and every person who looks at pictures sees it instantly. Turn it over. Read the bottom. Believe what it tells you. 📕📗📘 The three books — Turn It Over · Never Take the First Offer · The Ashford Ledger https://mrwalterashford.com #WalterAshford #Antiques #Paintings #Art #EstateSale #KnowWhatYouOwn
