Description
Ever wondered why the first element of an array is stored at index 0 instead of index 1? 🤔
It's not a random rule!
In many programming languages, arrays use zero-based indexing because an index represents the offset from the starting position of the array.
Imagine an array starts at memory address 1000, and each element occupies 4 bytes.
The first element has an offset of 0, so its address is 1000 + (0 × 4) = 1000.
The second element has an offset of 4, so its address is 1000 + (1 × 4) = 1004.
This makes calculating an element's memory location straightforward. Zero-based indexing is also closely associated with the design of languages like C, though programming languages don't all use the same indexing convention.
In this Short, we'll explain why arrays start from zero and how zero-based indexing works with a simple example.
