Description
There is a city inside me I have never lived in.
π Its walls are turquoise. Its domes catch the last of the sun.
The old men in its markets know my name β though I was born a thousand miles from it, and never went. The women in its courtyards sing songs my grandmother sang me before I could speak the language of a country I would leave.
I have been walking toward this city for my whole life.
I have never gotten closer.
SAMARQAND β the ancient Silk Road city that has lived in the imagination of half the world for two thousand years. Every Persian poet has sung of it. Every Turkic ballad mentions it. Every Central Asian grandmother's stories return to it eventually.
But this song is not about the city on the map. It is about the city you are always trying to reach, in yourself.

π§ Listen with headphones. In the middle of the song, Rumi speaks. He is telling you what the ney is really singing about. It is not just a reed. It is you.

π EXCERPT (English narrative)
There is a city inside me I have never lived in.
Its walls are turquoise. Its domes catch the last of the sun.
The old men in its markets know my name
though I was born a thousand miles from it, and never went.
I met a Sufi in Bukhara once β he was very old
and drinking tea in a doorway a saint had once stood in.
I asked him: "Have you ever been to Samarqand?"
He laughed. He said: "My son, I have never left it."
The city we are looking for is not on any map.
The road to it is folded up inside our chest.
The gate is opened by a word we have all forgotten.
Someone remembers it. Someone will teach us again.
SAMARQAND.

β¨ ABOUT THIS TRACK
The whispered verse in the bridge is the opening quatrain of the *Masnavi* β the greatest work of JalΔl al-DΔ«n Rumi (1207-1273), the Persian Sufi master whose poetry has traveled from Konya to Kashgar to Kabul to Delhi to New York over the past eight hundred years.
These specific lines β the "Song of the Reed" β are considered the most famous opening in all of Sufi literature. Rumi teaches us that the ney (reed flute), cut from its home in the reed-bed, cries out its longing for the ground it came from. And that we are the reed. Cut from our home. Making music from the ache of our separation.
We left the words in his original Persian. Some things must be heard, not translated. Rumi in Farsi is a doorway. Rumi in translation is a beautiful description of a doorway.
