Description

If you've been pulled over by a Chevrolet Caprice police car in America since 2011, you were pulled over by an Australian. Not the driver — the car. Built in Melbourne, shipped across the Pacific, and handed to American cops. And it wasn't the only one. For more than a decade, General Motors quietly imported Holden-built cars, put American badges on them, and sold them to people who had no idea where they came from. This video tells the story of Holden's American export program: the Pontiac GTO that looked too plain, the Pontiac G8 that was too good to survive GM's bankruptcy, the Chevrolet SS nobody advertised, the police Caprice most Americans never noticed, and the Camaro that rides on a platform Holden developed in Australia. It also covers the ute that never shipped, and the exchange rate that made all of it harder. In this video: – How Bob Lutz and a Car and Driver review started it all – The Pontiac GTO (Holden Monaro) and why it struggled – Holden's billion-dollar Zeta platform – The Pontiac G8 and GM's bankruptcy – The Pontiac G8 ST ute that never shipped – The Australian dollar problem – The Chevrolet Camaro's Australian engineering – The Chevrolet Caprice police car – The Chevrolet SS and the end of Holden's US exports If you've ever owned or driven a G8, a GTO or an SS, drop a comment — I'd like to hear what it was like.
