Description
When we picture Abe Lincoln, the Rail Splitter, we imagine a man born swinging an axe. But the real story is far stranger: two hundred miles from the nearest store, frontier families could not buy the tools to split a winter's wood, so they made their own from wagon tires, scrap iron, sapling branches, and an old axe that had quit cutting trees. Some of these tools you have never heard named, and some of them you may have been using wrong your whole life. In this video, we count down 25 frontier splitting tools and old-time methods, from the wooden maul bound with a wagon tire and the sapling glut to the froe, the riving brake, and the worm fence, and reveal the two fence rails that helped put a man in the White House and the woodpile one man split and never burned a single stick of.
