Description
Sweet potato pie is more than dessert in many Southern families—it’s tradition, holidays, church gatherings, and memories passed from one generation to the next.
My Grandma was known for her incredible sweet potato pies and even sold them, but sadly, her exact recipe was lost over the years. This isn’t Grandma’s original recipe, but it’s the delicious Southern sweet potato pie I make today—and one worth keeping. ❤️
Classic Southern Sweet Potato Pie
Ingredients
1 lb sweet potato (about 1 large)
½ cup salted butter, softened
1 cup granulated sugar
½ cup evaporated milk
2 large eggs, slightly beaten
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 (9-inch) unbaked pie crust
Directions
Place the whole sweet potato in a pot and cover with water. Bring to a boil and cook until completely tender, about 45–55 minutes. Pierce with a fork to check for tenderness.
Preheat oven to 350°F.
Drain the sweet potato and run it under cold water until cool enough to handle. Remove and discard the skin.
Place the sweet potato in a bowl and lightly mash. Add the softened butter, sugar, eggs, and evaporated milk. Mix until smooth and the butter is fully incorporated.
Stir in the cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla.
Pour the filling into the unbaked 9-inch pie crust. Bake at 350°F for 55–60 minutes, or until a knife or toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean.
NOTE: Don't worry if your pie puffs up a little like a soufflé while baking! It will settle back down as it cools.
Allow the pie to cool completely before slicing and serving.
Enjoy! ❤️
If your family has a special sweet potato pie story or recipe, I'd love to hear about it in the comments.
Until next time… may your kitchen always feel like a hug from Grandma.
