Discover 15 Native American meals and gathering foods that were made to feed people, preserve ingredients, travel well, and make the most of what was available.
In this video, I go through foods from different Native nations and regions, including fry bread, Indian tacos, Three Sisters stew, bison stew, posole, kanuchi, prairie turnip, dried meat, pemmican, wild rice, salmon, piñon nuts, wojapi, Diné mutton stew, and traditional corn preparations.
Along the way, I also explain the practical lessons behind these foods, from controlling heat and moisture to preserving meat, stretching a meal for a crowd, and transforming simple ingredients through traditional preparation methods.
Native American food is not one single cuisine, and these dishes come from different communities with their own histories and traditions. What connects them is the practical knowledge behind them, feeding families, preparing for another season, preserving food, and making simple ingredients worth coming back for.
If you have eaten any of these foods at a gathering, let me know in the comments. Also tell me what you want to see next, another list of traditional foods, one ingredient explored in depth, or a full recipe from start to finish.
