October is the month most people quietly give up on their lawn. The mower goes into the garage, the hose gets coiled, the leaves start falling, and you tell yourself you will fix everything in spring. But October decides what that lawn looks like when the snow melts. The grass may be slowing down above ground, but the roots are still working, the weeds are storing food, and the grubs are still eating underneath. Here is what I do every October in Lancaster County.
THE 7 OCTOBER JOBS:
1. KEEP MOWING. As long as the grass is still growing, keep cutting it. Lower the height gradually over the last two mowings, never scalp it, and mow light dry leaves right back into the lawn
2. GIVE IT THE LAST FEEDING. For cool-season lawns, feed while the grass is still green and the roots are active. This is the food your lawn stores for winter and uses to wake up strong in spring
3. DIG AND LOOK FOR GRUBS. Cut back one square foot of turf at the edge of a brown patch and count. Five or fewer, leave them alone. Ten or more means you may have real root damage
4. GET THE WEEDS NOW. Dandelions and other broadleaf weeds are moving energy down into their roots in fall. That makes October one of the best times to remove them or treat them properly
5. DO NOT STOP WATERING YET. Your lawn still needs moisture while the roots are growing. Count rainfall toward roughly an inch a week and keep watering until the ground begins to freeze
6. SPREAD A THIN COAT OF COMPOST. A quarter to half inch over tired or thin areas feeds the soil slowly, improves the ground, and helps weak spots fill back in. Thin means thin. You should still see grass through it
7. KILL THE MOSS BEFORE YOU RAKE IT. This is the one most people do backward. Treat green moss first. Wait until it turns black or brown. Then rake it out and fix the real cause: shade, wet ground, compaction, low pH, or mowing too short
ONE IMPORTANT WARNING: if you planted new grass this fall, keep weed killer away from it until the new lawn has been mowed three or four times. And never walk or mow across grass while it is white with frost.
Here in Lancaster County, between zones 6 and 7, October is our last good window before winter. Colder zones may need to move sooner. Warmer zones may have more time. And if you have Bermuda, St. Augustine, or zoysia, the fall feeding advice is different because those grasses are shutting down for winter.
None of this makes a lawn perfect overnight. Compost needs the winter. Weeds take time to die. Grass fills in slowly. What you do now is what you see when spring comes.
So before you put that mower away, give the lawn one more afternoon.
Tell me in the comments what state you are in, your growing zone if you know it, and whether your mower is already sitting in the back of the garage. I read every one, and I will tell you where I would start.
