Description
At 63, I stopped doing nine chores my Japanese mother never skipped, and my house is cleaner now than it was when I was forty. My husband calls it the lazy club. Then I found a paper taped inside my mother's cupboard door, and I'm still laughing about it.
Here are the nine chores and the lighter Japanese habit that replaced each one: vacuum slowly twice a week instead of fast every day, let shirts dry on the hanger they live on, scrub carrots and potatoes instead of peeling them (and cut out every sprout and green patch), cook one hearty soup and one dish, send one kind last holiday card, dry handkerchiefs flat on a clean window and steam blouses after the bath, clean windows on a cloudy day from the floor, run the whole house on two wastebaskets, and give every chore, with all its little steps, one name on a list inside a cupboard door.
00:00 Nine chores I stopped at 63
01:23 1. The vacuum, slow and twice a week
02:59 2. Shirts that never get folded
04:24 3. The carrots nobody peels
05:49 4. One soup, one dish
06:58 5. The last holiday card
08:24 6. The handkerchief on the window
09:54 7. Windows on a cloudy day, no ladder
11:27 8. Two wastebaskets for the whole house
12:27 9. The whole job, not the helping
13:48 The honest part
14:45 Who profits from the hard way
15:28 One little thing for tonight
Please be gentle with yourself: cut every sprout and green patch out of potatoes (and throw out very green or bitter ones), never climb a ladder when you're home alone, follow your care labels, and ask your doctor about cleaning if anyone at home has asthma or allergies.
Walk through your house and count your wastebaskets, every room and the bathroom too. Put your number in the comments, and tell me where you live. I read every one.
