Description

A supermassive black hole just did something astronomers have never directly observed before: they caught it switching on. 600 million light years away, in a galaxy still busy forming new stars, a black hole that had been dormant is now firing multiple blasts of matter into space at up to 14% the speed of light. Using the XRISM spacecraft's ultra-precise X-ray instruments, scientists caught this black hole in the exact, fleeting moment it's waking up — a transition phase thought to last only a few tens of millions of years, and one that had never been resolved in this kind of detail until now. In this video, we break down: – Why almost every large galaxy hides a supermassive black hole at its core – How galaxy collisions trigger explosive bursts of star formation – What "ultrafast outflows" are, and why scientists call them cosmic bullets – How XRISM detected three separate outflows moving at different speeds – What this means for the future of our own Milky Way This is one of the clearest windows we've ever had into the relationship between a black hole and the galaxy that surrounds it — and what may eventually happen when the Milky Way collides with Andromeda.
