Description

Between 2015 and 2025, Missouri added 21 new Amish settlements, more than any other state in America. Its Amish population has grown nearly twice as fast as the national rate. So why are thousands of Amish families leaving Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Indiana for Missouri? In this Amish documentary, we go deep into the Ozarks to Seymour, Missouri, the largest Amish settlement in the state, home to about 4,550 Amish in 24 church districts, where many families still ride open-top buggies. We visit Bowling Green, Missouri’s oldest Amish settlement (1947), the quiet working community of Clark, and Jamesport, the state’s most famous Amish tourist town. And we uncover the simple numbers that explain this migration: farmland around $5,000 an acre, lower property taxes, and rural counties with no zoning rules. You’ll discover: Why Missouri added more new Amish settlements than any other state How farmland prices in Missouri compare to Iowa and Illinois Inside Seymour: produce auctions, sawmills, and open-top buggies Why Jamesport is NOT Missouri’s largest Amish community How a brand new Amish settlement takes root The real problems that come with fast Amish growth Would you welcome an Amish community moving into your county?
