Description

Before central heating, fridges, and mechanical ventilation, British builders designed homes with a sophisticated understanding of airflow, temperature, and passive energy. This video explores ten clever home features that quietly disappeared from British houses over the twentieth century, not because they stopped working, but because they were cheaper to leave out. From the north-facing larder with its marble slab and wire mesh window to the double-door draft lobby that functioned as an airlock, each feature solved a real problem with nothing more than good positioning and simple materials. The airing cupboard used heat from the hot water cylinder that would have been lost anyway. Air bricks kept suspended timber floors dry through passive ventilation. Sash windows ventilated rooms without fans. Folded timber shutters outperformed thermal curtains in measured heat retention tests. The video traces how each removed feature was eventually replaced by an electrical appliance on a running cost, and asks whether what got called progress was really just a profitable swap made by builders who handed over the keys and drove away. #homeimprovement #britishhomes #passivedesign #energysaving #architecture #homedesign #sustainability #victorianhouses #renovation #diy
