Description

There's one sentence that can help lower five of your monthly bills, and most retirees have never said it out loud. The lower prices are often already sitting there. Companies just don't offer them unless you ask. When you retire, your income usually gets smaller and steadier. Your bills don't shrink with it. They creep up a little every year, and that's how a careful budget slowly turns into a tight one. This video shows you how to lower your bills with a few short phone calls, using simple questions anyone can ask. Here are the five bills we cover. 1. YOUR INTERNET BILL Internet companies often save their best prices for new customers. If you've been with the same company for years, you may be paying much more for the same service. We show you which team to ask for, and why they often have discounts the regular help line can't offer. 2. YOUR CAR INSURANCE Three quick questions can lower your price. Ask about a discount for a safe driving class, a lower price for driving fewer miles, and savings from putting your home and car insurance together. Many states require insurance companies to offer older drivers a discount for finishing an approved class. 3. YOUR MEDICAL BILLS Before you pay a big hospital or doctor bill, ask for a detailed bill that lists every charge, and check it for mistakes. Then ask about a discount for paying all at once, and whether there's a program to help people pay. Under federal rules, nonprofit hospitals must have a written plan to help patients who can't afford their bills. Depending on your income, it can lower your medical bills or even wipe them out. 4. YOUR PRESCRIPTIONS Ask your pharmacist two questions every time. Is there a cheaper version of this same medicine? And is the price lower if you pay without your insurance? Since 2018, federal law has stopped insurance plans from blocking pharmacists from telling you about a lower price. If you have Medicare drug coverage, there's also a yearly limit on what you pay yourself for covered drugs. 5. YOUR CREDIT CARD INTEREST Many credit cards now charge more than 20 percent a year. One phone call to the number on the back of your card can be enough to ask for a lower rate. A LendingTree survey found that most people who asked for a lower rate got one. On a 5,000 dollar balance, dropping from 24 percent to 18 percent saves about 300 dollars a year in credit card interest. Then we get to the reason so many people never make these calls, and the exact sentence that works on almost any bill.
