Description

If your family carries a Choctaw Freedmen surname—or a name as common as Brown, Lewis, or Willis—old enrollment records may reveal a history your family could only speak about in fragments. In this video, I explore how Choctaw Nation records can help connect family stories from southeastern Oklahoma and the Red River country to the people and communities recorded in history. I look at the 1885 Choctaw Nation census, where some entries contain both an individual’s name and the name of the person who formerly enslaved them. I also examine claim files and testimonies that identified Choctaw fathers, family connections, and community ties—even when those details did not appear on the final enrollment list. Names such as Folsom, LeFlore, Pitchlynn, Harkins, McCurtain, and Willis may offer a starting point, but the records and the stories within them are where the deeper answers can be found. #ChoctawFreedmen #FamilyHistory #Genealogy #NativeAmericanGenealogy #ChoctawNation #BlackHistory
