Every year, young Wodaabe Mbororo men - nomadic Fulani herders of the Sahel - gather to compete in a male beauty contest. They spend hours painting their faces red with ochre, lining their eyes black, wearing handmade beaded vests and towering hats with ostrich feathers. They then perform the Yaake dance for hours in the desert sun, rolling their eyes and showing their white teeth - because for Wodaabe, white eyes and white teeth is the beauty standard. Why?
