Description

In today's #short, we'll take a look back to 1995 when a brand-new NBA expansion franchise, the Toronto Raptors, became Canada’s first full-time Basketball team in a league dominated by U.S. markets. What followed was a turbulent and often overlooked chapter in Toronto Raptors team history. In this All Sports History episode, we take a super quick history of the Toronto Raptors, starting with the 1995 expansion draft. The Raptors’ first-ever franchise selection was three-time NBA champion B.J. Armstrong, a move that immediately backfired when he refused to report to training camp, forcing Toronto to trade him before he ever played a game. In fact, only three players from that original expansion roster would last more than one season with the team, highlighting just how difficult life was for a new franchise trying to compete with established teams in the NBA. As expected for an expansion team, the early years were filled with losses. The Raptors finished last in their division in each of their first three seasons and spent much of the late 1990s and early 2000s searching for stability, both on the court and off it. Behind the scenes, a battle for ownership of the Raptors added another layer of chaos, as the ownership of the Raptors changed hands and the franchise struggled to define its long-term direction. One of the darkest moments in Toronto Raptors team history came in 2006, when the team blew an 18-point lead against the Los Angeles Lakers, a game forever remembered for Kobe Bryant’s legendary 81-point performance. It was a painful reminder of how far the franchise still had to go. By 2007, things began to shift. Chris Bosh emerged as the face of the franchise and led Toronto back to the playoffs, marking a turning point in the history of the Toronto Raptors. But postseason success remained elusive. Former Raptor Vince Carter returned to eliminate Toronto in a first-round series with the New Jersey Nets, followed by another first-round exit the next season against the Orlando Magic. This Toronto Raptors documentary covers the forgotten early years that shaped the franchise, from expansion struggles and ownership battles to playoff heartbreak, long before moments like DeMar DeRozan being traded for Kawhi Leonard would redefine the team’s legacy. Why Did Players REFUSE to Play for the Toronto Raptors? From expansion chaos to long-term ambition, this is TORONTO RAPTORS: A SUPER QUICK HISTORY, a key chapter in the 25 year history of the Toronto Raptors and one of the most fascinating rebuilds in modern NBA history.
