Two honest things: out of the first fifteen Roman emperors, ancient writers record only ONE with no interest in men. And I chose to keep slavery at the centre of this, because Rome's famous "freedom" rested on people who were legally property and couldn't refuse — you can't tell this story truthfully without that.
Two Roman men do exactly the same thing. One is celebrated. The other is finished — mocked in the street, blocked from office, done. Same act, same city, same year. Rome genuinely didn't care who you loved. It cared, obsessively, about one thing: whether you were on top.
A senator and his lover at dinner. Fourteen emperors out of fifteen. Soldiers singing a filthy song at a triumph. And one rumour that haunted Rome's greatest general for thirty years.

From the conquest mentality that shaped the bedroom to the faith that finally flipped it all, this is the honest story of the strangest rule in the Roman world — and the man it very nearly destroyed.
🎬 5 things I learned making this:
1. Of Rome's first fifteen emperors, only one — Claudius — is recorded as having no interest in men. For the other fourteen it was just ordinary biography.
2. There was no "gay" or "straight" in Rome. Latin had no words for it. The only question was active or passive — dominant or submissive.
3. Roman law never banned love between men. It protected the freeborn citizen's body. The line was status, not gender.
4. Julius Caesar was accused of taking the passive role with a foreign king as a young man — and it followed him for THIRTY years. He denied it under oath. His own soldiers sang about it at his triumph.
5. The ugly root: the passive role was shameful because it was "the woman's role." The whole system rested on contempt for women.
