What evidence was presented, what arguments were made, and what could the court's decision mean? Follow the key developments as we examine the case and explain the legal issues. Subscribe for more US courtroom stories, judge reactions, police accountability cases, and legal commentary. Today's case comes out of East Cleveland, Ohio — a police department that came apart in court. Over the last two years, a long series of its officers went to trial, and jury after jury came back with guilty verdicts, reaching all the way up to the former chief of police. Most of them gave up the right to ever work in law enforcement again. This video follows the sentencing of three of them. A commander who ran two high-speed pursuits — one that ended in a fatal crash and one that ended in a wreck — and then played down his own role on the radio and in his reports. A sergeant who had the chance to correct the record and instead let the false version stand. And a detective the prosecutor called "a bully with a badge," recorded using force on people who had already surrendered, including a man down on his knees. The judge walks through the body-camera footage, the reports, and the trial testimony before handing down the sentences. Along the way the department was tied to robbing drivers at traffic stops, taking bribes to falsify reports, and burying incidents in paperwork — and much of it only surfaced because bystanders recorded what otherwise would have disappeared.
