Description
You have seen military cemeteries before. But you have never seen a grave guarded like this. So nothing about what happens at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery is going to make sense to you.
On a hill overlooking Washington, D.C., an American soldier takes exactly twenty-one steps across a black mat, turns toward a white marble tomb, and waits twenty-one seconds. Then he turns again and repeats the same precise movements. When the tourists leave, the guard remains. Through rain, snow, summer heat, and the middle of the night, the watch continues twenty-four hours a day, three hundred sixty-five days a year.
This is the story of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, where American soldiers first stood guard in 1926 and continuous twenty-four-hour protection began in 1937 — and of the men who have kept that promise for generations. In 1921, Sergeant Edward F. Younger chose an unidentified American soldier from four coffins in France using white roses. More than a century later, Captain Sean Paul Stolarski carried those same symbolic flowers during his final walk in May 2026, as America marked one hundred years since military guards first took their posts at the Tomb.
