Description
Three klipspringers are caught on lower ground as a pack of African wild dogs begins closing the distance.
On open savanna, the advantage seems obvious. African wild dogs are fast, efficient runners capable of maintaining pressure over open terrain.
But klipspringers are built for something very different.
As the chase reaches a granite outcrop, speed begins to matter less. The small antelope move onto narrow rocky footholds, using short, precise steps where the dogs have less room to maneuver.
Then the klipspringers do something that seems dangerous.
They stop running.
With the wild dogs still below them and no obvious escape route ahead, the encounter becomes a contest of terrain rather than speed.
This natural-history reconstruction is inspired by documented observations of African wild dogs encountering klipspringers in rocky habitat. Some shot-to-shot transitions have been reconstructed for educational storytelling while keeping the animals’ anatomy, movement and behavior grounded in known natural history.
On open ground, speed belonged to the dogs.
But on the rock, a few centimeters of footing decided everything.
